Capabilities for living and lifelong learning
The New Zealand Curriculum identifies five key competencies: • thinking • using language, symbols, and texts • managing self • relating to others • participating and contributing.
WE ARE ALL LEARNERS!
At St Joseph’s, the beliefs that underpin our teaching and learning are that
- all children can learn
- learning is finding out what you don’t know
- learning can be challenging and requires persistence, flexible thinking, asking questions, taking risks , resilience, humour
- learning is holistic – spiritual, physical, emotional, social, intellectual
- best learning occurs in an environment of trust and respect in which trial and error is celebrated
- all children can be supported to take ownership of their learning and become independent, self-directed learners
- children learn best when they know ‘what, why and how’ they are learning
- the learning process, as well as the end result, is recognised as worthy of celebration

ANZAC DAY 2015
ANZAC PARADE by Achira Guzman from Kakapo Team
When it was April 25th, it was the Anzac Parade. I walked in the parade. I was walking with Josh MacDonald. I was holding the wreath with Josh. When I finished walking around the road, I sat down, then me and Josh put the wreath on the army people’s crosses. I felt proud of myself and our school. Then we sat back down into our lines. I had a really good day at the Anzac Parade.
Last Saturday I was walking in the Anzac Parade. I walked very far. My legs felt like collapsing but they didn’t. Then everyone watched the flags go up. At the end, my mum picked me up. By Liam K from Kakapo Team
ANZAC CROSSES by Altanya Suparman Home Group 2 Kakariki Kotahitanga
Room Two waiting nicely for shiny white wood. Each of us was included in this amazing experiment because when we make these crosses it is to remember all the soldiers that fought for our country and the whole world.
Home Group 2 made 30 crosses to remember all the people who died. It wasn’t very easy to do. We had to measure all the right lengths, put it in the right places and try not to make a horrible mistake. When we were all completed, we were proud of what we had done.
So, when every time you see those crosses, think about the soldiers who were in World War 1 who were trying to save the world and us.
Guns and Roses
Dead bodies rot, guns out of ammo
This battlefield should not be forsaken
For we will remember all our loved comrades
Who fell in this field of “guns and roses.
Their families should not mourn
They know they defended what was right
But they keep things to remember them
For their last sight was ‘guns and roses’
