Religious Education Learning
“Learning Strand – CHURCH – Community of Disciples – TE WHANAU A TE KARAITI
Learning Focus: Belonging
We belong to and participate and celebrate in communities such as our family-whanau, our school and our parish. The Church is a community of Christ’s followers or disciples called together by the Holy Spirit to carry on Christ’s mission in life today
One way we help carry on Christ’s mission today is by our generosity in donating money to the Missions.
Next Wednesday, Kakariki Team students are running a Market Day with all proceeds going to charities such as The Moko Trust, Caritas, Salvation Army, and St Vincent De Paul. The children are researching which charity they should donate to.
Next Friday we will have a Mufti Day with a gold coin donation. (details below)
Each year since 2007 the New Zealand Catholic Primary Principals’ Association (NZCPPA) have partnered with Caritas to run a Mufti Mania day to build solidarity through raising money for poor and vulnerable communities.
This year on July 8th all New Zealand Catholic primary schools are invited to have a Mufti Mania day to raise awareness and funds for a small school in Solomon Islands called St John Bosco Primary. Located in Nila in the Shortlands of Western Province, this small school of three teachers and 80 students is in need of building repairs including the construction of new toilets. Knowing the importance of looking after teachers and students, this initiative will be crucial to enhancing the teaching and learning at the school.
A Sister’s Life
Written by: Janine Orjalo
School Reporter, Year 6 Kakariki Team
Today, a sister came to talk to the year sixes about being a helper of the community. She became a sister when she was 28 years old and she had to make 3 important vows to the church. Sisters live a normal life not so much of a difference to us. What inspired her to be a sister was not a magic moment. She just wasn’t settled and she was uncomfortable with her job, so she thought about living a very religious life and decided to give it a go. Sometimes she has doubts – that she made the wrong choice when she is feeling lonely and there are much older sisters than her.
Her salary money goes towards helping the community. They still provide shelter, enough food to eat and of course clothing. She doesn’t own much and the furniture that she has is owned by the community. They still get presents and gets to celebrate public holidays. We had an interesting lesson with her talking about a sister’s life in the church.
Thank you so much for all the information you shared with us today, Sister Sian!

Congratulations to Marian D who is a real expert in Origami. Take a look at this beautifully intricate work of art she produced. It took her 3 days and she learned how to do it from a YouTube Video.

High Tea
Congratulations to the PTA Team who produced a classy, stylish, amazing High Tea last Sunday. Everything was superb. The food was outstanding. A lovely choice of teas and real coffee as well! The hall and tables looked amazing and the children’s artworks just added to the beauty of the scene. Thank you!
Thank you to all who supported this event. From what I could tell, everyone had a great time.
CYBER SAFETY
Never assume that your children will behave on line. Just like in real life, in the virtual world there are temptations and children need our advice and guidance every day. You would not let your child run freely on the road; on the highway of cyber space, we cannot afford to let our kids do this either. YouTube has many wonderful videos…an endless supply. However, our children can learn “more than their prayers” in this domain. PLEASE do not let children use their devices away from adult company and supervision.

Sports Field Proposal
For those parents that are not aware, we are investigating options proposing a synthetic turf be laid on the main lower field. This will be multi-purpose to allow for great versatility and maximum usage, both informally for the pupils to play on and for sports training.
The idea will leave grass areas for play, but doing this will allow for an area that will be usable all year round. This would create more practice and play areas for the children and teams and be able to be used for training where we currently use Rosmini facilities.
What we need at the moment is support and discussion on this work to assess the level of enthusiasm for driving this forward and ensuring that we create a great space for our children.
A meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 July at 7p.m. in the staffroom, to discuss this further and decide on the next steps. You are most welcome to attend.
