Catholic Character Review: Catholic Community at St Joseph’s Catholic School Takapuna 2016
Thank you to all you responded, giving us your feedback. We appreciate the positive response and suggestions for improvement.
The following identified as strengths:
Staff feel a strong programme is in place
Parents are confident that RE features strongly in the centre of school life
Kids are positive and engaged and share their learning with their parents
The following areas to be worked on:
- The way we communicate to parents about the RE programmes is working for many parents but not for a minority – so we should pilot some different ways to make the available information and opportunities for involvement more accessible to parents.
- The new board members are largely confident in the School’s programme and the detail of their understanding of the programmes will grow over time.
- The DRS is confident planning is strong but that growing staff capability in this area could be key to taking the RE programme to an even higher standard.
Responses from parents included:
“The Catholic Character is clearly a very special part of life at St Joseph’s school.
RE is not confined to just a set lesson time but is apparent throughout all aspects of the school community. The children are always encouraged to live the mercy values.
The Wall displays in the classroom show a great deal of importance placed on RE and the RE book has been shared at open mornings with parents and care givers. We are also welcome to stay for prayers at any time.
Parent – teacher interviews, RE Book and homework, by inviting us to be part of prayers time and other religious events
The special catholic character of St Josephs was an important factor as to why our son attends here. The Christian values are very important to us in our son’s education. We thank the school for teaching this in a caring and loving way. – God Bless
RE is one of the main reasons my children go to St Josephs. The liturgies are a great way to engage parents and grandparents.
These [The liturgies] are very special to be part of, we appreciate the invitations to these and communication about these in advance so work schedules can be altered.
The wall displays in the classrooms show a great deal of importance is placed RE and the RE book has been shared at open mornings with a parents and caregivers. We are also welcome to stay for prayers at any time.”
Responses from Students Included:
“We learn to be more like God and follow the road of holiness.
It makes me enjoy RE because I can do things I enjoy and do them better.
Makes me have a better trust in God and makes me more caring.
In response to a question related to talking about RE at home: “Usually, to teach my parents something about Religious Education.”
I can understand God and always turn to him knowing that he will be there for us.
It makes me feel more open to my mind and gives me enthusiasm.
We learn some many things that we didn’t know before and it encourages me to read the bible.”

The Jesse Tree with symbols of people and objects from the Old Testament, telling the story leading up to the birth of Jesus. A fun activity to do at home.

GREAT SPORTS
GREAT RESULTS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WHO COMPETED!
Great Basketballers
The St Joseph’s Hornets played a great season at the Breakers, losing by 1 point in the semi-finals (such a shame!) but going on to win their final game to come 3rd in their year 3 / 4 league. The score was 6-2 over the Castor Bay Panthers.
Year 3/4 Gold League
After coming top of their grade in Semester 1, the year 3 and 4 St Joes All Stars team were put into the top grade at North Harbour Basketball with the St Joes Magic year 4 team. The All Stars had an amazing season winning 7 out of 9 games. This result took them into the final against the strong, all year 4, St Joes Magic team, who were unbeaten all semester. It was a proud moment for the St Joseph’s teams to be recipients of Gold and Silver medals at the awards ceremony after the final on Tuesday night.
Year 5/6 League 1
Our year 5/6 St Joes Cavs team had another outstanding season and they were the very deserving recipients of a gold medal on Tuesday night. We are very proud of their outstanding success all year!
Thank you to Paula who has done such a great job as Sports Co-ordinator this year! Thank you so much to all our coaches and managers and the parents who support their children’s sporting teams in basketball, netball, hockey and flippa ball, touch rugby as well as in the tournament fixtures for Rippa, Soccer, Table Tennis, Golf and various one-off events such as Pupuke and Catholic Schools Cross Country, Pupuke Athletics, Pupuke and North Harbour Swimming. Our children and school are very well served by you!
GO NOAH
What an amazing show! Thank you to all the children, teachers and teacher aides, office staff, property manager, lighting and sound directors, Mr Kelly for masterminding the stage build and helping out with so many aspects, Mrs Kelly for being managing the tickets sales so patiently and efficiently, the parents who helped with set building, creating props, costumes, make-up and hair – what an amazing team of people! A very special thank you to Meidy Lambert, Alice Simmers, Kim Wannenburg and Sioux Manning – the Production Team Extraordinaire! Thank you so much everyone!
A very special gift, as I finish my time at St Joseph’s, which I will always treasure!
