Welcome

We have had a wonderful start to our school year and it is great to have all our students back in school. The staff are enjoying hearing all about what the children have been doing over the Christmas break.

We especially welcome our new students and new staff members. We formally welcomed them at our first school prayer assembly on Tuesday morning. It was lovely to see so many parents at the assembly.

Thank you to the many parents who have taken the time to introduce themselves, and their families to me. I have had a stunning welcome. My family and I had a lovely Christmas break moving north, and now Victoria and I are really enjoying our new life here in Auckland.

I have met many of you at the morning tea on the first day and at the first two team picnics. I will be attending the three team picnics that have yet to occur, so please come and say hi. I will be trying not to burn the sausages!

New Beginnings

The theme for our school year is ‘New Beginnings’. This was chosen as we are a school that has a number of new staff, who bring with them range of skills and experiences, that will complement those of the staff who have developed St Josephs into the excellent school of teaching and learning that it is. We will integrate this theme through all we do throughout the year. It is going to be an exciting year of celebrating the wonderful teaching and learning that happens at St Joseph’s and looking at how we; students, staff, families and parish, can further support and develop this.

Religious Education

The students in our school are moving on to learning about Jesus and how they can be like him. We will put further information about this learning in upcoming newsletters. Please find information on this learning strand on the faithalive website. Search for your child’s year group and then Jesus Strand. http://www.faithalive.org.nz/assets/Resources/Family-whanau-book.pdf

School Mass

Our first school Mass is next Wednesday 15 February, beginning at 9.15am. It will be celebrated by Monsignor David Tonks. All family members, friends and parishioners are welcome to join us. The Mass will be followed by morning tea in the school staffroom which everyone is invited to. This is an opportunity to formally welcome our new principal, families and staff members.

Leadership

Today our Year 6 students are learning all about leadership. They are our student leaders for 2017. They began the day with a guest speaker Sue Morris, from Crackerjack Kids. She is a motivational speaker and talked to the students about what it is to be a leader. We look forward to supporting our Year 6 students in growing their leadership skills and supporting them in ‘making a difference’

Leadership Morning

This morning the year 6’s had leadership day, which we had been waiting for, for the last 5 years . Sue from the Cracker Jack kids was our guest speaker, and she explained the importance of being a leader. She taught us in a variety of ways through songs and dances. We had to be risk takers and even get up and dance even when we were embarrassed! Her message to us was inspirational and gave us lots to think about. Later we made slogans about what she taught us and decorated the playground with a chalk designs. We made a slide in groups about what leadership is and will use this in one of our school assemblies. We  re enacted scenarios from  playground behaviours and made solutions to the problems. We had so much fun and now we are ready to take on the challenge of becoming a leader!
