ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC
SCHOOL
TAKAPUNA
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Talofa Parents,
Students have been learning Samoan this week as part of Samoan Language week. A special thanks to Gallo Boyle for coming in to support students and staff, with their learning of the Samoan language. The Samoan population in New Zealand is one of our fastest-growing populations and largest Pacific group. Gagana Samoa is our third most spoken language – following English and Te Reo Māori; and the second most spoken language in Auckland. Check out this website which shares information and resources on the Samoan language.
This weekend NZ celebrates its first King’s Birthday Weekend. This sees us having a public holiday on Monday, 5th June. The school will be closed on this day. I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy a great family long weekend.
Thank you for arranging for your children to go home on Wednesday afternoon this week. I appreciate this was short notice and no doubt required parents to put in place various arrangements to achieve this. Teachers continue to be in negotiations with the Ministry of Education over the terms and conditions of their contract. This is for both secondary and primary teachers. Secondary teachers have restarted their rolling strikes. The primary teachers union are in further discussions with the members as to next steps. We hope that the government and union can come to an agreement soon.
