PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Whanau
Thank you to all our families for supporting Daffodil Day. It was wonderful to see all the children decked out in yellow. And thank you for the gold coin donations. The money raised will be donated to the Cancer Society. This organisation is amazing in the way it supports those impacted by cancer. It is wonderful that we, as a community, can show our support for them.
Today the Kiwi team celebrated a beautiful liturgy in the hall. It was wonderful to see so many whanau at this liturgy. They were also joined by Monsignor David and seminarian Mark Bond. The children spoke and sang beautifully.
Thank you very much for your AWESOME support of our Book Fair. We sold nearly $9,000 worth of books which means we can purchase over $3,000 of books for our school library. There was also wonderful support for the Pacific Island Book Project. We received a significant number of books which were kindly packed by our parent volunteers. Thank you so much to these parents who helped out throughout Book Fair Week.
Next week we will be having a visit from a representative from the Education Review Office (ERO). They are coming for two days, to talk with us about our programme of teaching and learning. Below is further information on their visit.
On Monday, the 4th of September, we will be having a Father’s Day breakfast AND Sharing the Learning. All families are invited to join us between 7.30am and 9.30am and see their child’s learning; plus enjoy a bite to eat. Mum’s are welcome to have a sleep in and send the children with Dad. He can do the Sharing the Learning and report back to you at the end of the day. 🙂
Take care
Ka manaakitia e te Atua.

PTFA’S “STARS IN THEIR EYES” MUSICAL BINGO
The St Joseph’s Musical Bingo Night is coming up on the 8th September. This is a fun-filled evening that brings together parents, teachers, and members of the community for an enjoyable night of fun and music. If you haven’t already purchased tickets we encourage you to do so soon via the PFTA website https://stjosephspta.org.nz/products/stars-in-their-eyes
We are also currently collecting items for each of the themed hampers that have been allocated to the different learning teams. These are currently being collated by the Home Group Teachers until Friday, 1st September. We would love it if you could bring in an item to add to the hampers relevant to the themes below.
The team themes are as below:
- Kiwi Team – Adult female
- Kea Team – Adult male
- Kakapo Team – Gardening
- Kakariki Team – Sports
These themed hampers will be auctioned off on the night and the proceeds from the live auction held during the evening will directly contribute to improving our school’s facilities, resources, and educational programs. In particular – additional equipment for our new junior playground.
We are also collating a bottle board for the evening, if you would like to donate a bottle or two towards this, you can drop it off at any time to Julie at reception.
If you have any items or experiences you’d like to donate, please do not hesitate to contact us at pta@sj.school.nz. We will gladly arrange the logistics and answer any questions you may have.
Thanks so much for your support with this effort – it is very much appreciated!

YUMMY STICKER COLLECTION – SHEETS DUE BACK SEPTEMBER 15TH
ERO
The Education Review Office (ERO) has shifted to a more developmental approach to evaluation that supports each school’s improvement over time. Key features of the new approach, Te Ara Huarau, are that ERO will:
- work with all schools in an ongoing way rather than as a one-off event
- connect with each school’s strategic planning and reporting cycle as part of their improvement journey
- work in partnership with schools, collaborating in support of equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners
As a result, each school will:
- have a dedicated ERO Evaluation Partner who works alongside the school
- have a different experience depending on needs, strengths, and their school’s specific evaluation focus
- be on a three-year evaluation cycle
What will public reporting on ERO’s website look like?
As schools’ transition into the approach, ERO will work with schools to publish a one-off Profile Report. This will focus on the strategic goals schools have in place to improve learner outcomes and what the school is seeking to achieve through the evaluation.
Within a three year cycle all schools will then have a Te Ara Huarau |School Evaluation Report. This report includes information about the school’s improvement journey, what the school has achieved for learners and their future priorities.
All schools will receive a Board Assurance with Regulatory and Legislative Requirements Report about their board’s attestation to meeting those requirements. Provision for International Students and Hostel Reportswill be published where applicable.
Other reporting
Progress Reports – These reports are not published on ERO’s website. Progress reports will provide specific information for specific audiences such as your board, the community or the Ministry of Education.
More information is available on ERO’s website ERO.govt.nz/how-ero-reviews/Te-Ara-Huarau
