PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Kia ora Whanau

This morning at school prayers, we congratulated Fr Mark Bond on his ordination to priesthood. Fr Mark was ordained on Saturday, 24th August. He is a former pupil of St Joseph’s so it was great to be able to celebrate this very special Sacrament, as a school community.

Next week, the team Kakariki has their Market Day. The children have been planning and preparing their stalls over the last few weeks. It is great for them to be able to put their reading, writing and maths skills and knowledge into a real life situation. There are a great variety of stalls and each school team will have an opportunity to view and purchase from them. Please, can children bring along coins if you wish for them to make a purchase. The money raised goes to the charitable organisations the Kakariki children have chosen to support. Parents are welcome to join in.

Market Day
Friday, 20th September
11:30 am – 1:00 pm

The next two weeks are the final weeks of Term 3. Next week, Week 9, is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2024. The theme is ‘Ake Ake Ake A Forever Language’. It represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of our language. It also reflects the commitment New Zealanders have to embracing and learning Te Reo Māori long into the future. Check out the website.

Week 10, the last week of the term, will see the learning spaces open, Tuesday, the 24th of September through Thursday, the 26th of September, from 8:15 am – 8:45 am, for ‘Sharing the Learning’. This is when your children share what they have learnt this term. Your children look forward to sharing their learning. So we would heartily encourage you to take up this opportunity. We are holding it over the three mornings in order to hopefully allow everyone to pick a day that suits them; and to have enough car parks for you all. We ask people to free up the lower parish car parks by 9:00 am for the parishioners who attend the morning Parish Mass.

Have you completed the AskYourTeam Community Involvement Survey? If you have not, please do so as it closes the evening of Sunday, 15th September. We appreciate parents completing this survey as it assists us in our planning for 2025.

Have a lovely weekend

KAKARIKI MARKET DAY 2024

To help us prepare (and be inspired) for Market Day, we invited parents to come in and speak to us.

The first parent who came to speak to us was James Lee. He taught us about the business world, his experiences and how to earn a good profit. He told us the roles in the business world, and showed us an example of how we could start a business. He told us about our wants and needs. Afterwards he asked us to consider a few questions like “who is your customer?”, “what do they want and need?”, etc.

He also said that we needed to work in a team. Mr Lee talked about “the commercial model”, how we could improve our sales and how to cut a few costs. He told us that we should think: time is like our cost.

James Lee definitely helped us with our Market Day. We have learned a lot from him.

Elisabeth Ric Hansen taught us all about the world of advertising and marketing. She showed us marketing strategies. One example she showed us was Briscoes, and how they use discounts as a way to get customers wanting to buy their products. She demonstrated the importance of recognisable logos, like having vibrant colours and keeping it simple and memorable. She provided some examples of this by showing us some logos that we all knew, like TikTok and FaceBook. She showed us some examples of clever advertising and colourful ads. We learnt a lot about marketing from Mrs Ric Hansen. She helped us tons to learn about how to advertise our stalls!

Myline Dacanay came to teach us all about Sistema! She taught us about the working environment of the factory. She showed us videos of the factory. For one of them, we had to memorise the robot names. The people who got it right were given a free water bottle. She helped us to learn about how factories work and what’s in them; materials used to make their products; and the importance of testing products to ensure they meet certain standards. At the end of the slideshow, she picked two Year 6’s to be on a team, and two Year 5’s to be on another team. They had to assemble two Sistema containers each. The team who completed all of the Sistema containers first, received free water bottles. This shows us what it is like to work in the Sistema factory. Mrs Dacanay helped us a lot to learn what it is like in the working world!

To all of those parents, thank you so much for volunteering your time to inspire and support us.

We look forward to welcoming the school community to our upcoming Market Day on Friday, September 20th.
