Missions

At the end of Term 2 the students in Room 7 & 8 held a cake sale to raise funds for our sponsored child in East Timor. While this sounds simple, in reality it was the culmination of a lot of learning across the curriculum.

In the Technology curriculum we always aim to start from an authentic need. In this instance it was to raise funds for Adao, our sponsored child. After brainstorming ideas and encouraging innovation, they decided to have a cake sale. They were encouraged to look at possible problems and work to solve the issues:  Who would be responsible for organisation, sales, marketing, etc. Wearing a black thinking hat, what are some of the problems that could arise from this enterprise, e.g. allergies?  This included a variety of thinking skills and oral English.

Every student designed and made an advertisement of the sale (Visual English) on Microsoft Publisher. They also made posters to advertise their ware. (Persuasive Writing).

Mathematics came into play as they learnt how to give change when buying/selling. This was initially more challenging than the teachers expected and the children learnt a lot.

Interesting enterprising approaches were also noted on the day as children convinced others to buy their food! Those who were less venturesome found out that although their food was attractive looking and tasty, it was necessary to speak up and catch the attention of other children.

Well done to these children and their teachers, Mrs Cooper and Miss Burton. Our students have learnt a lot and one of the most important lessons which they have learnt is how to care for others. The missions fund was boosted by $742 thanks to them. This is what makes St Joseph’s such a wonderful school!
