Principal’s Message
Tēnā koutou
Today home groups 10, 11, 12 lead the 9.15 am parish Mass. Over terms two and three each home group is involved in leading a parish Mass or school liturgy. Students being involved in planning and leading Leading Masses/liturgies is an important part of our Religious Education programme. Next week will see home groups 13 and 14 leading the parish Mass. This is on Wednesday August 28 beginning at 9.15 am. All parents and whanau are welcome to attend.
Team Kiwi will be attending this coming Friday’s Parish Mass at 9.15 am. It is wonderful for the students to experience being a part of parish masses through the school term. It highlights for them and the parishioners that we are a parish school. All parents and whanau are welcome to join the home groups and teams for these masses. The masses the students attend are recorded in the newsletter and on the school calendar.

Rippa Rugby Report
On Thursday the 15th of August, there was a phenomenal rippa rugby tournament. The day, which was action-packed, was full of amazing sportsmanship and friendly competition. The five Saint Joseph’s teams from Kakapo and Kakariki, played fantastically and had super fun whilst doing it.
We interviewed one of our players, Eliza P from HG3. She said, “It was such a great experience and we loved every second of it, everyone was sad that it had come to an end!’’ This tournament was World Cup themed and our school was assigned Wales. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly, kindly lent us some of their Welsh merchandise. It was great to see what the other schools had pulled together with their given country.
Overall, it was a fun and amazing experience and we could not have done it without our coaches who volunteered their time and the parent helpers. Two of the five teams remained unbeaten for the duration of the season and all of our teams showed great progress.

Football Tournament
On August the 1st two teams of yr 3&4 and 5&6 went to Bayswater to play in a football tournament against many schools. Each team played about six games, although we didn’t win all our games everybody had fun playing against a mix of schools.
It was a freezing cold day, with a powerful wind and occasional showers. But it didn’t dampen our spirit and the kids’ determination. Everybody played well in the short fifteen minute games. The teams were picked out of a hat, so we had a mix of abilities. Fabulous sportsmanship was shown in each and every game.
The 5 & 6’s team had a great result, they made the plate semi-finals. The year 3 & 4’s did even better and came 3rd overall, making the playoffs for the winning cup. We are all really looking forward to the next tournament in November, and wish everybody good luck.

Cans for Christmas
As a school community we are very generous in supporting those in need. Each year we participate in the CAN DRIVE. Cans For Christmas is an opportunity for students in Catholic Schools throughout Auckland to bring in a can of food for a famliy in need. The cans are given to families in time for Christmas. Thank you for your support. Please ensure the ‘used by’ or ‘best by’ date is at least in 2020.
Measles

“Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can be very serious. At http://www.arphs.health.nz/public-health-topics/disease-and-illness/measles/, you’ll find information on what symptoms to look out for, how to best protect yourself and others, as well as what actions to take if you’ve been in contact with someone with measles.
If you are concerned about measles call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or call your GP.
Please do not just turn up to your GP, after hours or emergency department as you could potentially infect others.
Lockdown
This week the KPNG Canterbury Schools/Early Learning Services 15 March 2019 Lockdown Review Report was released. Our procedures are:
- Lockdowns can be activated by the school or by the police. If activated by the school, police will be informed.
- In either case the police are in control and will be directing the school as to what to do.
- Communication to parents will be by email and through the school website at regular intervals.
- Parents are not to come to school until advised by the school/police that the lockdown status has been lifted.
- All student devices will be shut down as a safety precaution.
- We ask that parents do not contact the office during a lockdown in order that phone lines are available for communication between the school and emergency services.
- Food and water will be available for students in their learning area should it be required.
Should the Ministry of Education recommend any further steps to this procedure, as a result of this report, we will notify parents of these.
