PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

With Wellington being in Alert Level 2, this is a timely reminder that COVID-19 continues to have an impact on our lives. Therefore we need to take the appropriate precautions to look after ourselves and our community. Please follow the steps below, as recommended by the Ministry of Health:

  • Use the NZ COVID-19 tracer app – Scan the QR codes everywhere you go and turn on Bluetooth tracing.
  • Stay home if you are sick – If you are unwell, isolate wherever you are and call Healthline to discuss whether you need to obtain a free COVID-19 test. Please remember, if your child shows any cough or cold symptoms, they must stay at home. Please contact your doctor or Healthline.
  • Practice good hygiene – Wash hands, cough/sneeze into your elbow and regularly clean surfaces. Please remind and encourage your child to follow these good hygiene practices.
  • Wear a face covering – Please wear a face covering whenever you are on public transport (buses, trains, ferries and airline flights).
  • Vaccinate – Find out when you can get a COVID-19 vaccine and how to book your vaccination appointments on the government’s COVID-19 website.

The Principal’s Message will cover the following topics:

  • Monsignor David Tonks
  • Mid-Year Reports
  • Sports Registrations
  • Term 3 Dates
  • “Bug Hotels” – A Contribution from our Eco Leaders
  • Happenings ‘Round the School

Monsignor David Tonks

Monsignor continues to make progress with his healing from the recent surgery he underwent. The Bishop’s request not to visit or contact him continues during this recovery time. Please keep Monsignor in your prayers.

Mid-Year Reports

This Friday, July 2nd, our Mid-Year Reports and the Spotlight Samples the children have been working on will go “live”. Following this, we will be using the App for more communication.
There are still a small number of families who have not logged into the App yet. It is very important that every family has this @School App as there will be key information shared through it going forward. We will not be printing reports this year.
Please access the App instructions here: @school app instructions Meanwhile another email has been sent to you today. Please check your Junkmail if you haven’t received it. If you require support logging on, please bring your device to one of the office staff and they will endeavour to assist you; or see Sarah Nicolson (upstairs in HG3) before or after school this week (her contact email is sarahn@sj.school.nz).
Thank you.

“Bug Hotels” – A Contribution from our Eco Leaders

Bug Hotels and Their Uses

Did you know that bug hotels are easy to make and are great for the environment? If you want to make one you’ll need:

  • hot glue,
  • 3 tins/jars,
  • a bit of string
  • some dry leaves and sticks

Step 1: glue the containers into a pyramid shape.

Step 2: tie 2 pieces of string around the hotel.

Step 3: fill the containers with your sticks and dry leaves

Step 4: place them in a suitable area.  The best places are cool and damp with a bit of shade.

Step 5: wait for them to be filled with bugs of all kind.

That’s it, simple, cheap and you can use recycled tins/jars for the shape.

Bug hotels are great because they help so many animals. The bugs live and breed in the hotels and in turn feed birds and other bug eating animals. It is also a great place for native bugs to be safe from other invasive bugs. The other upside is that even if you live in an apartment you could put them in the local park or the apartment’s community garden. Either way they’re fun to make and great for the environment.
