PTFA Update – 29th August 2022

Hi everyone,

My name is Camille Coom and I am the current PTFA Chair.  My Husband, James and I, have one child at St Joseph’s – Will, who is in Y5.  Our eldest attended St Joe’s from Y1, but is now enjoying Y7 at Rosmini College.

PTFA Constitution & Code of Conduct

For 2022, we have changed the structure of the PTFA to create an Executive Committee. We have also finalised our Constitution and Code of Conduct.

Executive Committee

At our AGM, the following roles within the Executive Committee were elected:

  • Chair – Camille Coom
  • Treasurer – Annabella D’Lima
  • SecretaryPosition vacant / seeking volunteer
  • Exec Committee – Janet Sprosen
  • Exec Committee – Natasha Luxford
  • Exec Committee – Amanda Snedden
  • PTFA Website Admin – Amanda Snedden

In addition to the Executive Committee, our planning committee is open to all whanau, friends, and teachers associated with our school.

How you can get involved

We’d love to have more members join our ranks so we can continue to support our school community. The PTFA is currently a small group and many of our active members have children who are nearing the end of their time at St. Joseph’s. This means our numbers are falling and it’s becoming more difficult for us to do everything we want to do, to support our community.

We’d love your help and there are several ways you can get involved:

  • Join the committee

The PTFA meet on the 2nd and 6th Wednesdays of every term, at 7:15pm in the staffroom at school (or via Zoom).  Meetings are held to discuss what’s happening in our community; plan for how we can bring our community together and achieve our fundraising goals; and review how our previous initiatives went.

  • Volunteer network

If you are happy to help out, but don’t want to commit to the committee, sign-up to be a PTFA volunteer by emailing PTA@sj.school.nz. We’ll add you to our volunteer network email distribution list so you can find out what initiatives are coming up and how you can get involved. You can also keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.

  • Support PTFA initiatives

We appreciate that you can’t do everything, all of the time.  But if and when you can, please support our initiatives. While some events are focused on fundraising, many others are about providing opportunities to bring our families together. However, these only work if you come along!

  • Offer your specialist skills or contacts to help deliver our buckets

A number of the initiatives we are fundraising for require specialist skills such as designers, builders, building supplies, paints etc.  We are keen to support businesses from the school community where we can (even better if you are able to give us a great deal!). Please get in touch so we know who to contact.

  • Donate your AirPoints or FlyBuys

One way to support the school without outlaying money is to exchange AirPoints or FlyBuys for Gift Vouchers and donate them to the PTFA. For instance, Mitre10 (Paint/ Wood/ Sandpaper etc), New World (Tiaki/ Pastoral Care initiatives), etc.

  • Donate an item directly to the school

Our PTFA fundraising website is updated with the ‘nice to have’ items we are fundraising for and provides the option for families to donate a specific item to the school

What we’re working towards

We take our responsibilities and fundraising seriously and want to be transparent with our community regarding what we do and how we do it.

Last year we set-up “fundraising buckets” to support short, mid and long term goals for the school.  These goals have been set by the PTFA committee and the school’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and will be updated each year.

You can view what we achieved in 2021, our current fundraising buckets and our targets for 2022 here.

In 2021 we also set-up a PTFA fundraising website that allows us to do things such as selling tickets to events, hosting second hand uniforms sales, providing opportunities for families to donate a specific item to the school and to create awareness around businesses that offer discounts or incentives to our community.

PTFA initiatives to look forward to this year

We have some fantastic initiatives in the pipeline for the remainder of 2022, including a school disco, knowledge-a-thon, pie days and the return of our always popular Quiz Night & Fundraising Auction! We hope we’ll have your support in making these a success.

Thank you

We are incredibly blessed to have a fantastic sense of community at our school. We appreciate the work our PTFA does to put on these events, and the support from all of you towards their efforts.

As mentioned above, we need more people to get involved in supporting the PTFA. Please feel free to come along to our next week on Tuesday, 30th August at 7:15pm in the St Joseph’s School Staffroom (or via Zoom). Alternatively, email pta@sj.school.nz if you are able to join our volunteer network or help out in another way.

I look forward to seeing you at our “Shipwrecked” themed Quiz Night on Friday 9th September from 6:30pm at Bar Africa!  A MASSIVE thank you to Amanda, Janet, Joelle, Gemma, Clare, Tinaka and Jo who have worked tirelessly on the event to ensure it will great success – it’s certainly a night not to be missed!  Tickets are selling fast and can be purchased here.

Thank you for your ongoing support of PTFA initiatives.  If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
