PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Kia ora whanau

Over the coming week the children will be looking at Matariki.

Matariki is a cluster of nine stars that can be seen in our night sky at this time of year. Each of the stars have their own unique characteristics that Māori acknowledge and honour

Pōhutukawa connects us to our loved ones that have passed on.

Tipuānuku determines the bounty of foods such as kūmara.

Tipuārangi is linked to birds and other elevated foods such as fruits and berries from trees.

Waitī is associated with all freshwater bodies and the food sources that are sustained by those waters.

Waitā is associated with the ocean and all life within this domain.

Waipunarangi is associated with the various forms of rain.

Ururangi connects us to the different winds.

Hiwa-i-te-Rangi is the star to which our dreams and aspirations are connected too.

Matariki signifies reflection, hope, that gathering of people, and our connection to the environment.

As a school we will be celebrating Matariki with our school Disco Thursday, July 4th. As a country we celebrate Matariki with a public holiday next Friday, June 28th. The school will be closed that day.

CARITAS GOLD COIN DAY – JULY 5TH

BELONG & BUILD EXPO – 30th JUNE

Date: Sunday, 30 June
Time: After 10:30am Mass (11:45am-1pm)
Location: St Joseph’s Church Takapuna – Parish Hall

About the Expo:

The Belong & Build Expo is designed to encourage our community to explore and join various ministries and community groups within the church. It’s essentially like a careers expo, where attendees can learn about different groups, discover where their particular gifts and skills might best be utilised, and have conversations with those who are already serving in these ministries.

Engagement:

We want to engage with people beyond the ordinary confines of our weekend Masses, and this expo is a perfect opportunity to do so by involving the wider school community too. For many parents and teachers, it’s not just about serving; it’s about finding community and a place to belong. We hope to provide that for them.

Service Opportunities for Children:

There are several specific ways for children to get involved:

Angelus Children’s Choir: As a singer or musician.
Children’s Mass: As a reader or actor in our skits at our monthly Children’s Mass.
Altar Serving: At any of our Masses.
Parent Involvement: Engaging parents to help organize and make our Children’s Mass special.

RIPPA RUGBY TOURNAMENT

On Thursday, the 13th of June, St Joseph’s took five teams to the Rippa Rugby tournament at Takapuna Rugby Club. The teams involved children from Year 3 to Year 6.

This was an awesome day of rugby, with lots of our Year 3s playing rugby for the first time.

Each team played four games against other schools from the North Shore. We also enjoyed playing against other Catholic schools such as St Leo’s and St Mary’s.

We thank all the whānau who helped coach, manage and support us at the tournament. We look forward to our next tournament in August.
