Dear Parents

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Parent Teacher Meetings today. This was an opportunity to discuss your child’s mid-year progress report and how they are going with their learning. If you were unable to book an appointment, please get in touch with your child’s teacher by email and they will arrange a time that suits you both.

At school prayers this morning we welcomed nine new students and their families to our school community. This is a very special celebration for our children and the new children and their families.

Another special celebration that is happening next week, is the Sacrament of Confirmation. A number of our children will be receiving this Sacrament Thursday evening next week. At the masses on the following Saturdays/Sundays, the children will then receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. They will have then completed the three Sacraments of initiation into our church; Baptism, Confirmation, First Holy Communion, Please keep these children in your prayers.

Friday next week, the children will be visiting the school ‘Scholastic Book Fair’. The Monday of the following week we will be opening our book fair week with our book parade. Children are welcome to come along dressed as their favorite book character. Parents are welcome to join us, and following the parade, you can check out the book fair in the school library.

The Olympics have provided us with great entertainment over the first week. This morning we had two gold, two silver and one bronze. Wasn’t the women’s rugby sevens amazingly intense along with Hayden Wilde’s triathlon? A spectacular sporting event that highlights many of the world sports and the counties of the world for our children. Continue to enjoy the viewing.

Last Friday we had a fantastic Olympics Day at school.

We did awesome sports such as football, golden child and badminton.

At the start of the Olympics day, the whole school did something called the Opening Ceremony where every person represented one of five countries: Tonga, Philippines, Argentina, India, and Great Britain.

At the end, there was a Closing Ceremony where we were ¨athletes¨ and one person from a different country held a flag of their country’s team.

It was one of the BEST celebrations I’ve had. At the end, I was sweating a lot then my dad picked me up. I really wish we have another Olympics day, four years from now.

It was a spring-like winter morning, the sun shone like never before. As the bell rang, we all rushed to the hall to wait for Waiata in our chosen sports clothes. After we sang our hearts out singing the national anthem and other fun songs, we all went to class to make medals and flags.

At 10am, the whole kura went to the courts for the wonderful opening ceremony, where we split up into different countries. I was in the Tonga group. Other countries were Great Britain, India, Philippines and Argentina. We waved our flags with great pride and cheered, as the torch bearers ran with the torch, the flames dancing in the winter breeze.

After morning tea, we had our activities. Each group went to five different activities. My group did floor tennis, relay race, badminton, handball and bean bag toss. There were other activities which ranged from Golden Child to football games. They were all very enjoyable and fun.

After lunch, everyone hurried to the back field for the grand Closing Ceremony. There were parent races, Year5 boys race, Year5 girls, Year 6 boys, Year 6 girls, and the most favorite of the day… the teachers race!!!

I would like to give a huge tino pai to all the year 6 leaders, sport captains, teachers and Mr Bridgman for what was such a memorable day.

With active measles cases increasing around the world, and falling vaccination rates, Aotearoa New Zealand is at very high risk of a measles outbreak.  

Not enough people living in New Zealand are immunised against measles – just one case could start an outbreak. We need at least 95% of people to be immunised to prevent this. 

Immunisation is the best protection against measles. It’s more important than ever for people to check they are protected.
